Artist Statement - Dr Antonietta Fermie (Sanfilippo)
I started painting Abstract works in 1997. I am a hobby artist. My abstract works are aimed at displaying something that the mind cannot easily understand at a first glance, and the viewer must make some attempt to form their own interpretation or feelings about the work. This would seem to be one of the main of goals of abstract art, to create motifs, symbols and compositions that do not exist in the real world, and in this way I am no different to other abstract artists. I enjoy using bright colours and dots in my work. I aim to create images that challenge, as well as invigorate the environment of the viewer. When I start a work I may have a concept in mind, or I may not. Usually I am guided first and foremost by the composition of colours, which I choose before I start creating the work.
I'm also now starting to produce Digital artworks - it has taken me a long time to master these works to a level where I am happy to exhibit them, however I think this is definitely the way forward for me. To create the digital sketches, I upload my photographs/artwork onto computer software and I then manually sketch/trace over them with a digital pen on a touchscreen computer, and I also employ other software functions (I'm computer science/digital media trained). All digital works are original. I do not appropriate/use other people's photos or art work - I only use photographs I've personally taken, and paintings/drawing/images I've created from scratch (with only a few exceptions, namely the 'Swine' series where I used a few bits and pieces allowable for commercial/public use via copyright license). These digital works are printed at quality commercial level, with UV protection coating.
My style is eclectic - non-commercial art / ongoing experimentation. I'd love to complete an academic research thesis on 'Kandinsky' in the future, or other study in art/design theory or practice.
Many of the images on this website are not always of the greatest quality, nor are dimensions and titles currently stated - I started as a hobby artist, working full-time, being a mother, studying - being so busy impeded my ability to document the works effectively (however in time I hope to improve this aspect, and get the works re-imaged/photographed professionally).
Note: My exhibited artwork is registered under Sanfilippo. I have will revert to my true surname as of Fermie, as soon as I have the opportunity to pursue this, as it's quite an involved process.
